Today is our free day, so after all the drinking and traveling we needed some well earned r&r by the pool listening to music and reading our books and doing absolutely nothing, with emphasis on the word NOTHING!........So we started by going for a jog down by the river and around Napa town center. On return we had our breakfast out on the terrace next to the fire pit, we noted that that not only was the temperature around 85 ish, but the fire pit was blazing and the dozen patio heaters were also on... we were cooking!
We bumped into our new American friends Pam and Beth who had hired a car and asked us to join them on a wine trek; Tom quickly declined as he had already had a early start playing with his balloons, and also remembered the word NOTHING!.... S and I on the other hand never miss a free drink and forgot the N word, and replaced it with the words “absolutely yes!”
Pam had got a local tip about a fantastic Persian winery, Darioush, and being super organised she phoned up to check that that they did tastings and asked if they had a gift shop, to which they replied with a very snooty voice ‘We have many fine retail items”. Sounded like we needed show them we could handle posh wine and posh retail items!
We drove up the long driveway to this Venetian / Roman villa complete with columns and water lilly ponds....Oooooh very posh.
Inside, there were indeed some very fine retail items with matching fine prices. To show that us Brits can afford such fine items, I flashed the cash and bought.....yes ..2 tea spoons! We then took out a loan to pay for the wine tasting, but well worth it. We had the best Viognier ever! (Yuppy white wine)
We then moved on to another winery - Hagafen but this time offering 5 tastings for free with a coupon! The wines were of less a quality with Pam saying about one wine that it was “quaffable but hardly transcendent” (great quote from the film - Sideways).
Sonya was more taken with the “Peaches in a bottle sipped in an hammock in South Carolina on a hot summers day” Reisling.
Beth & Pam preferred the “Rough hairy tattooed biker” Cab Franc
The girls then dropped us off where we joined Tom by the Pool for an hour, before going out for a late lunch at the Oxbow Market. In the market we found the worlds most expensive ice cream!
The evening was spend at hotel’s very classy outside restaurant where we had some lovely food, and yes more free wine by the fire pit before retiring for the night.
I am so pleased that we had a quiet day doing nothing!
