Wine, Castles & Torture Chambers

Fastest jog this morning in an attempt to get rid of some of this fine food & wine; then off to Calistoga but first forced to stop at old Christian Brother’s winery in St Helena to wonder at Brother Timothy’s corkscrew collection - enough said!

Next a hike to a grist mill where we had to battle rattlesnakes & poisonous oak to get to it. Risky moment passing Mount St Helena as Peter gets upset by non-erupting volcanoes - Wayne & Helen will remember that fondly from Hawaii... However he was soon soothed by a nice glass of buttery Chardonnay @ 10.45am at Clos Pegase.

Lunch was at a riverside cafe in Calistoga with our new BFF Pam & Beth where we ate most of Pam’s main course on her. Then up to the stunning Castello di Amorosa - a 14th century Italian castle with a 21st century vineyard complete with torture chamber - the Iron Maiden / the Virgin of Nuremberg was particularly scary

Down in the tasting room Tom did his best to impress Logan, the vineyard’s guide, by polishing off ALL the wines but it was too much, even for him...

The evening was finished off by a farewell dinner at the Nichelson Ranch which is a fantastic little family winery single handedly run by super woman Ramona
